Social & Emotional
Hawthorn District 73 is committed to creating an environment where students, staff and the community feel supported. Teachers strive to weave social emotional learning into the curriculum on a daily basis. There is time allocated weekly for Hawthorn staff to focus on the SEL standards.
Elementary Social Emotional Learning
Hawthorn uses Second Step to explicitly teach social emotional skills in four areas: skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving. Collaborative lessons build a sense of classroom community; strong relationships among peers and with staff are established and maintained.
Middle School Social Emotional Learning
Students from relationships with trusted staff members and peers through participation in the middle school advisory program. Social-emotional skills like social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and conflict resolution are taught during monthly lessons.
